Centrelink Payments to Increase for Millions of Australians in March Due to Inflation – Millions of Australians, including those transitioning from incarceration and reintegrating into society, will see an increase in their Centrelink payments this March as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to adjust welfare in response to inflation.

For many in the Mates For Life program, which supports people recently released from prison in rebuilding their lives, this increase could provide much-needed relief to cover essential costs such as rent, food, and transportation.

Why Are Centrelink Payments Increasing?

The Australian Government adjusts welfare payments twice a year to reflect the rising cost of living. With inflation driving up the prices of everyday necessities, these payment increases aim to ensure people relying on Centrelink benefits can maintain a basic standard of living.

Who Will Benefit?

The upcoming increase will apply to recipients of various Centrelink payments, including:

  • JobSeeker Payment – for those actively looking for work.
  • Disability Support Pension – for those living with a disability.
  • Age Pension – for older Australians.
  • Carer Payment – for those providing full-time care.
  • Youth Allowance & Austudy – for students and apprentices.
  • Parenting Payment – for single parents and primary caregivers.

For individuals in the Mates For Life program, this could mean an increase in JobSeeker or Youth Allowance, depending on their personal situation.

How Much Will Payments Increase?

While the government has yet to confirm the exact amount, previous adjustments have seen increases of around:

  • $20 to $30 per fortnight for pensioners
  • Smaller increases for JobSeeker and Youth Allowance recipients

These changes will come into effect on March 20, 2024, and will automatically be applied to eligible payments.

How This Helps Those Reintegrating Into Society

Adjusting to life after prison can be incredibly challenging, especially when it comes to finding stable housing and employment. For those in the Mates For Life program, even a small increase in Centrelink payments can make a significant difference in affording basic needs, securing transport to job interviews, and reducing financial stress.
