At Mates Storage, we take the responsibility of handling unclaimed items very seriously. When a storage rental term expires and the items remain unclaimed, we follow a structured process to manage these belongings. Initially, we make multiple attempts to contact the customer. This includes phone calls, emails, and letters to remind them of their overdue account and the need to retrieve their items. Our goal is to ensure that customers have every opportunity to claim their belongings.

If we are unable to reach the customer or if the account remains unpaid after a certain period, we proceed according to the terms outlined in the rental agreement. Typically, this involves a grace period during which the customer can still settle their account and reclaim their items. This period varies but is designed to provide ample time for the customer to respond.

Should the items remain unclaimed after the grace period, Mates Storage may take steps to recover the outstanding balance. This can include auctioning the contents of the storage unit. Auctions are conducted in a fair and transparent manner, often with prior notice given to the customer. The proceeds from the auction are used to cover the unpaid rental fees and any additional costs incurred during the process. Any remaining balance is typically returned to the customer, if they can be located.

In some cases, unclaimed items that are not suitable for auction may be donated to local charities or disposed of responsibly. We strive to handle all unclaimed items with care and respect, ensuring that they are managed in a way that aligns with our commitment to community support and environmental responsibility.

Throughout this process, our primary objective is to reunite customers with their belongings. We understand that circumstances can change, and we are always willing to work with customers to find a solution that allows them to reclaim their items. By maintaining clear communication and following a structured process, Mates Storage ensures that unclaimed items are handled fairly and ethically.
